Summer Masterclasses 2015

In Summer workshops – 2015 for young chamber musicians participated 37 students from the Latvian and Lithuanian music schools (19 ensembles) and 6 teachers (3 ensembles). Chamber music classes led by violinist, Professor Petras Kunca (Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre), violinist Sanita Salmane (teacher of Jāzeps Mediņš Riga 1st Music School), cellist Dace Pūce (teacher of Emīls Dārziņš Sekondary Music School), cellist Reinis Melbārdis (student of Jāz. Vītols Latvian Academy of Music), pianist Maija Blumberga (teacher of Jāzeps Mediņš Riga 1st Music School) and pianist Gunta Melbārde (teacher of Jāzeps Mediņš Riga 1st Music School). "My first steps in English" for the most recent led by violist Indra Priede.

"Ausātās", in which was held preparation for the 3 concert cycle "Chamber Music days in Zemgale", a total of 7 days of experienced instructors have been discharged into the chamber 122 Lesson including individual counseling. August 20 excursion became acquainted with Vecauces castle and gave concert in the ancient castle hall. August 21, our concert greeted Dobele Music School, but on 22 August - colorful flowers decorated Dobele Evangelical Lutheran Church. The last concert was particularly inspiring, because coincided with the 520 anniversary of church.

With the joy of children and young people joined the scheduled mode and order of the days, which was extremely intensive. Also, the weather spoiled us this time. Nature in close proximity of the forest, the lake, friendly, informal atmosphere encouraged creative work. Living conditions (2-3-bedded rooms of the guest house) as well as catering was close to ideal.

Joy for both large and small perfected a variety of evening entertainment, sports and fun table games in free moments. The youngest participants looked forward every evening fairy tale. At entertainment workshop were establishing the hats, which were presented at the final party "August’ Stars".

Each young chamber musician and Workshop manager finally received a certificate as well as humorous diploma, programs of our concerts and sweets. Memorable was the Evening ring around the campfire with endless negotiations that sometimes pulled past midnight. There where formed a special bond of friendship and new contacts.

We are waiting for young chamber music enthusiasts in the Summer workshops – 2016!

Foundation "We play music with friends" organizes summer camp "Summer Master Classes - 2014 for young chamber musicians in Dobele” again. Children and youth who perform in chamber ensembles are invited. The workshop will be held for 7 days from 18th to 24th of August, 2014 at the guest house AUSATAS 6 miles from Dobele, Latvia. A shuttle bus is organized.

We offer participants intensive training in addition to knowledge and skills, and learning new skills in chamber music with enthusiastic and friendly teachers:

violinist Dace Upatniece (Jāz. Mediņš Riga 1st MS)

Interesting and meaningful leisure activities, excursion, sports and evening recreation / leisure activities are also planned. These are organized by 2 assistants (Reinis and Lauris). We hope the closing party “August Stars” will be nice, too. AUSATAS is a 3-storey modern building, but the whole neighborhood - a romantic corner of natural forest (for recreation and walks), with a small lake. Accommodation in comfortable rooms with all modern conveniences (for 2-3 person). Delicious meals 4 times a day as well as something to chew in free time.

AUSATAS have adequate space for music lessons both with and without the piano. There will be a time for leisure, games, various sports activities, including swimming. We plan to invite 32 young chamber musicians. The participation fee is 80.00 EUR.

Summer Workshops 2013

1 st Summer workshops – 2013 for young chamber musicians in Dobele (Latvia) The latest event that had been fostered for a long time in the framework of Foundation „We Play Music with friends” activities were the first Summer workshops - 2013 for young chamber musicians. The event took place from August 19 to 25, near Dobele, in a lovely 3-storey rural guest house „Ausātas”. Surrounded by a quiet forest, on the shore of a small lake, far from the city crowds and noise...

Conditions both for living and playing music were close to ideal. This summer camp was attended by 36 young chamber musicians (including the chamber orchestra Armonico) and 8 teachers: Professor Petras Kunca from Lithuania and 7 teachers from Latvia. Intensive music lessons were held the whole week. The sunny weather really made us glad. When it was too hot for the orchestra to rehearse in the hall, they continued playing music on the 2nd floor terrace, close to the nature with great views of the lovely surroundings. The orchestral group work led by violinist Dace Upatniece and cellist Reinis Melbārdis was also held both indoors and outdoors. The culmination of the camp was two concerts: on August 23 - chamber music concert in Dobele music school. Before the concert, prof. P. Kunca and G. Melbārde held four open master-classes for Dobele teachers (with 2 chamber ensembles, a violinist from Limbaži and a pianist from Jāzeps Mediņš 1st Music School of Riga). We had staged a varied program for the concert with musical performances by the young musicians and workshop leaders. Finally the dream of the string quartet came true thanks to the enormous amount of work and love invested by prof. Petras Kunca. At the concert, they were playing with a true passion and on a superb artistic level, receiving the acclamation of the audience. On August 24, youth chamber orchestra Armonico, led by conductor Normunds Dreģis, performed at Dobele Lutheran Church. After the concert they received the enthusiastic reviews of the audience. Our Foundation had made sure that the free time in the summer camp would be substantively filled: there were both attractive morning exercises in the green meadow and trips to special places - Pokaiņu forest and ancient Castle ruins of Dobele. A family of white swans was nesting in our lake, adding a romantic accent to the beautiful landscape. On August 22 we watched with delight a wonderful full moon night from the second-floor terrace. For sport - swimming in the lake, from which our "mermaids" came out with white water lilies in their hair... We also played volleyball, chess, and games of Alias on the first floor terrace until late at night. Was housed the “painter’s workshop”, where they could paint the stones, and later held an exhibition. We should not forget the Evening circles around the fire with the interesting and exciting conversations! After the last concert the landlady of „Ausātas”, Vineta, surprised us before the rich feast with an opportunity to enjoy the spirit and delights of real rural bathhouse. Students and workshop leaders received certificates for active participation in this lovely, unforgettable week. At the end of the camp we were cheered up with variety of witty diplomas, noting each participant's creative nature and characteristics with friendly humour. We thanked Māra Rozentāle, director of Dobele music school, for creative collaboration. We particularly thanked cook Aija Cimmermane for the delicious and abundant meals four times a day. Our driver Ēriks, who masterfully guided us through all the routes, often to please the whims of musicians to deviate from the route, deserves particularly kind words of appreciation. The summer workshops for young chamber musicians will be held hereafter every year at the end of the summer holidays. These workshops will be international, as we will invite our friends from other countries and other Latvian music schools. See you next year!

The Foundation We play music with friends organizes Winter Master classes - 2011 in Riga Winter master classes - 2011 for chamber music teachers was held at the Jāzeps Mediņš Riga 1st Music school, 7th to 9th January, 2011. The event was opened by Professor Gunta Sproģe (pianist, Chair of department of chamber music and piano accompaniment of Jaz. Vitols Latvian Academy of Music).

This year's master classes led by teachers were violinist Petras Kunca (professor of Lithuanian Music and Theatre Arts Academy, Vilnius), violinist Alexander Kulikov (lector of Kungsvagen Music Institute, Espoo, Finland), cellist Juta Berzins (teacher of Pāvuls Jurjāns Music school, Riga, Latvia), and flutist Inga Grīnvalde (teacher of Jāz. Medins Riga 1st Music school, Latvia).

46 teachers from both the Latvian and Lithuanian music training institutions, participated and received certificates, as well as the ECMTA Chairman Evan Rothstein from Paris, who had a keen interest in our master classes and had decided to audit the courses. The four master classes teachers were also awarded certificates of workshop management. In total, the program consisted of four theoretical lectures, four open master classes, as well as 20 workshops with the ensemble that had been planned as individual master classes. But the interests of members turned out to be so great that it turned out well for the open hours.

The organizers had, as usual, carefully planned additional educational activities for teachers. This year’s session included attending a performance of Puccini's Madama Butterfly at the beautiful state theater. Another exciting event was a concert of master class leaders at the end of the second day, in the Jaz. Medins Riga 1st music schools new, beautiful large hall. This concert gave the opportunity to go beyond only listening to the masterclass leaders’ advice in workshops, but also to hear and see them enthusiastically playing ; it was like a kind of a practice session continued. It will remain for both the children and teachers as an inspiring experience.

At the end of the final concert the following day there was a presentation of the CD with the compulsory pieces of IX International festival – competition for young performers "We play music with friends". The recording was made in November, Jaz. Medins Riga 1st music school with the participation of students and teachers of the school.

30 students - 17 chamber ensembles of young performers – participated in the master classes. The children then performed at the Thanksgiving concert on January 9, which at the same time was also a tribute to our supporters and well-wisher. The Foundation “We play music with friends" organized all aspect of the session for teachers and young musicians – including coffee and tea breaks with sandwiches, biscuits, fruit - which made for a very intensive, but very pleasant, three-days of work.
To conclude the weekend, there was the traditionally large pretzels and refreshment table. Teachers will all received notebooks with the details of the course, the main points of the lectures, the concert programs for children and their chamber repertoire. Were able to obtain information on children's chamber festivals in other countries, to exchange sheet music, and books on the table to buy new music.

We Play Music with Friend Foundation in cooperation with Jāzeps Mediņš Music School of Riga organizes master classes for chamber ensembles 2010, 8th till 10th January (Jāzeps Mediņš Riga 1st Music School: Kronvalda bulv.8 Riga, LV-1010)

We can offer:

lectures on actual issues in connection with children’s chamber ensembles;
open classes;
individual lessons with chamber ensembles.

The master classes will be run by remarkable chamber musicians and competent teachers.

You can announce your participation and/or the participation of your ensemble till 2009, 1st December. You can do it either by phoning +371 67281668 or by sending e–mail weplay@inbox.lv. In the announcement you must name -

the school,
the teacher,
the membership of ensemble (age and instruments; name, surname of the participants),
the repertoire.

It will be possible to put one’s name down for the individual master classes from 1st till 20th December, 2009 by phoning +371 67281668; +371 22390939. The payment for a teacher – 10 LVL; for an ensemble at individual master classes – 5 LVL. Every participant pays his own staying. The organizers can advice where to stay in Riga.
